Un niño está jugando con cochecitos y ambulancias en una moqueta formada por hexágonos enlazados, una pelota llega hasta él, mira a la cámara, se ve su jersey, tiene un dibujo tejido a mano de un cohete, el apolo 11, se levanta desde el hexágono y comienza a caminar, avanza hacia lo desconocido, pero el espectador sabe que no debe hacerlo, y no puede hacer nada. Llega a la puesta de una habitación, es la 237. Se cierra la secuencia.

Otro niño llega a su cuarto, se acerca al equipo de música saca una cinta, pone otra, es Beethoven, se ve su cama, es una habitación muy pequeña en la que un espejo enorme permite ver prácticamente la totalidad del cuarto, la colcha está formada por hexágonos de los mismos colores que los que componen la moqueta sobre la que jugaba el niño. El niño, mucho más grande este último que el primero, se tira sobre la cama, sobre la moqueta. La cinta que ha sacado, (tenemos que ver la secuencia varias veces para cerciorarnos) es una obra de una banda ficticia Goggly Gogol, un grupo que aparecerá más adelante como el número 1 en ventas en la tienda a la que acude Alex. En la decoración del cuarto de Alex hay unos extraños cuadrados blancos extraídos de la pared. Son los mismos cuadrados que iluminan la estancia donde muere y renace el astronauta de 2001, suelo este que es a su vez el techo de la nave espacial que lleva a uno de los protagonistas de la cinta hasta el monolito.

A boy is playing with strollers and ambulances on a carpet made up of interlocking hexagons, a ball comes to him, he looks at the camera, his sweater is visible, he has a hand-knitted picture of a rocket, Apollo 11, he gets up from the hexagon and starts walking, moving towards the unknown, but the viewer knows he shouldn’t, and he can’t do anything. He arrives at the start of a room, it is 237. The sequence closes.

Another child comes to his room, goes to the stereo, takes out a tape, puts on another, it’s Beethoven, you can see his bed, it’s a very small room in which a huge mirror allows you to see practically the entire room, the bedspread is made up of hexagons in the same colors as those that make up the carpet on which the child was playing. The child, the latter much larger than the former, throws himself on the bed, on the carpet. The tape he has released, (we have to watch the sequence several times to be sure) is a work of a fictional band Goggly Gogol, a group that will later appear as the number 1 seller in the store Alex goes to. In the decoration of Alex’s room there are some strange white squares removed from the wall. They are the same squares that illuminate the room where the astronaut of 2001 dies and is reborn, this floor which is, in turn, the roof of the spaceship that carries one of the protagonists of the film to the monolith.
