In the 1950s, Le Corbusier faced a monumental challenge: finding a metrological system that would give meaning to the industrial architecture that was becoming dominant in the Western world. The unit of measurement we use in the West, the well-known metric system, presents an insurmountable problem: there are no men one meter tall nor women two meters tall, so any proportion related to humans must be established based on a metric system that is not anthropocentrically designed. After much effort, he devised the Modulor, a metrological system based on the golden ratio, the famous number phi. This proportion had been widely studied and used by architects of antiquity, and Le Corbusier and his followers sought to generalize it in the contemporary world. Its success, however, was quite limited. The best example of its use was, undoubtedly, the impressive Unité d’Habitation, built in Marseille.
Even so, taking advantage of one of those rare idle days in Valencia, we set out, camera in hand, to find traces—faint, perhaps diffuse—of the Modulor in some of our city’s brutalist buildings. But, to be honest, it’s also possible that we may have dreamed them up.
En la década de los 50 Le Corbusier se enfrentó a un reto mayúsculo, encontrar un sistema metrológico que dotase de sentido a la arquitectura industrial que se estaba imponiendo en el mundo occidental. La unidad de medida que utilizamos en occidente, el famoso sistema métrico, presenta un problema insalvable: no hay hombres de un metro ni mujeres de dos metros, por lo que cualquier proporción relativa a los humanos ha de imponerse en base a un sistema métrico que no está pensado antropocéntricamente. Tras muchos esfuerzos ideó el Modulor, un sistema metrológico basado en la proporción áurea, en el famoso número phi. Esta proporción había sido ampliamente estudiada y utilizada por los arquitectos de la antigüedad y Le Corbusier y sus secuaces pretendieron generalizarla en el mundo contemporáneo. Su éxito, sin embargo, fue muy moderado. El mejor ejemplo de su utilización fue, sin duda, el tremendo Unité d’Habitation, construido en Marsella.
Aún así, aprovechando uno de los raros días ociosos en Valencia hemos querido encontrar, cámara en mano, en algunos edificios brutalistas de nuestra ciudad, huellas, débiles, difusas quizás, del Modulor.
Pero, todo hay que decirlo, también puede ser que las hayamos soñado.
