Mies Van Reload - the Barcelona Pavilion

In 1929, Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich created the iconic Barcelona Pavilion, a landmark structure to represent Germany at the exhibition. It stood for only a few months. Sasha Stone, a brilliant Russian-born photographer, produced a photographic report of the building for the German magazine Berliner Bild-Bericht, which became one of the few records of what would become one of the most influential buildings in the world. Y ears later, in 1989, a group of Catalan architects used those images to reconstruct it.

Drawing inspiration from the legendary 1930s publication G. Material zur Elementaren Gestaltung (the mythical “G” edited by Hans Richter), we have attempted to reconstruct the conceptual space in which that ephemeral construction was once installed: the Barcelona Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich.
To achieve this, we’ve had the invaluable and ever-unsettling complicity of the elusive Hans Webber, along with the collaboration of our friend Vicky at the bookshop-gallery @espai_r , where, by the way, you can get hold of this publication in Barcelona.

En 1929, Mies van der Rohe y Lilly Reich crearon el icónico Pabellón de Barcelona, una estructura emblemática para representar a Alemania en la exposición. Solo permaneció en pie unos pocos meses. Sasha Stone, un brillante fotógrafo nacido en Rusia, realizó un reportaje fotográfico del edificio para la revista alemana Berliner Bild-Bericht, que se convirtió en uno de los pocos registros de lo que acabaría siendo uno de los edificios más influyentes del mundo. Años después, en 1989, un grupo de arquitectos catalanes utilizó esas imágenes para reconstruirlo.

Inspirándonos en la legendaria revista de los años 30 «G. Material zur Elementaren Gestaltung» (la mítica “G” dirigida por Hans Richter), hemos intentado recrear el espacio conceptual en el que se instaló aquella construcción efímera: el Pabellón de Barcelona de Mies van der Rohe y Lilly Reich.
